Spring Offensive - The First Of Many Dreams About Monsters - (Single Review)

At almost 14 minutes long, Spring Offensive’s, The First Of Many Dreams About Monsters, is very difficult to call a single. The epic track is a five chapter story, each chapter encompassing Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's Grief Cycle - Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance .

Dramatic from the opening samples of conversation and intense, slow drumming. This track rises and falls throughout, moving from stage to stage, with the intense sampling continuing amongst moody sections of depressive guitar and drums.

The First Of Many Dreams About Monsters is aptly named, it is certainly monstrous, and given too much thought I am sure you would have nightmares. The lyrics are extremely dark, shocking and thought provoking, yet brilliant. The instruments are played with the sole intent of intensifying the depressive outlook the lyrics have and at no point do they provide any rhythm or melody, instead they haunt and dramatise.

ImageDo not for one minute expect to listen to this and be left with a catchy hook in your head or the urge to dance, instead expect to be blown away by the amount of thought that has gone into this recording and also the depressive, satanic edge that this music has. It is not a happy track, it is not melodic, yet it leaves you shocked and amazed at the same time.

Having seen Spring Offensive live and having listened to some of their other material, I know that this group can play their instruments better, but by better, I actually mean more musically, the use of heavy guitar effects and intense, slow drum beats and crashes of symbols are fantastic. What they do with their music is intensify the already demonic lyrics and send their meaning to a whole new level. Almost like the background music in a horror film, the music haunts you.

This track then, is more a mini rock opera then a single. As a single it fails miserably, but as a collection of music it works brilliantly. The music is intense and focused around the lyrics, which are absurdly wonderful. Spring Offensive have a real talent for penning lyrics that hit you deep in your gut and leave you gasping for breath. So much so, I wonder if I will sleep tonight.
