Elbow, Bernard Butler & Paloma Faith To Spearhead New Phase Of Music Matters Campaign From May 2011

Leading artists including Elbow, Bernard Butler and Paloma Faith are spearheading a new phase of Music Matters, a campaign that seeks to engage music fans directly, highlighting the value of music and raising awareness of legitimate online music services.

The Music Matters campaign launched in 2010 with unanimous support from all sectors of the music industry – artists, managers, all four major record labels and independents, publishers and retailers alike.

Through the campaign website at www.whymusicmatters.org it engaged music fans through a well-received series of inspirational animated films from artists including The Jam,  Nick Cave, Sigur Ros, and Kate Bush amongst others.  To launch the start of the new phase Elbow, Bernard Butler and Paloma Faith have worked with animators to create new short films, a selection of which can be found over at www.youtube.com/whymusicmatters

The next phase of Music Matters will significantly ramp up online consumer engagement over the next twelve months, asking music fans to directly get involved and pledge their support.  Music Matters is also encouraging artists - both established and emerging - to contribute videos and commentary about the enduring value of music and what it means to them.

UK Music retailers remain key partners in the campaign, with Music Matters placing renewed focus on the Music Matters Trust Mark [the gold badge] that helps consumers to identify legitimate sources of music.

Music Matters creator Niamh Byrne said, “It’s great to see the Music Matters campaign gather momentum and unite artists & industry with one common purpose; to remind us about the enduring value of music.  We have built some great foundations, but it’s just a start.  We need to continue to amplify the message and propel the campaign into the mainstream.  Our aim is to continue to engage with music fans around thought provoking films about important artists & musicians and in doing so raise awareness of all the ways to consume music responsibly.”

“We are kick starting the new phase of the campaign with support from some of Britain’s most credible artists – Elbow and Bernard Butler amongst others. We also have other films in production collaborating with some of the biggest names in music.  It’s great to see everyone joining in and things finally gathering steam.”

The Music Matters project is driven by a pan-industry steering committee with representatives from all areas of the industry, working together to communicate the work of the campaign effectively.
