Damon Albarn Set To Perform Live In ‘Doctor Dee’ Opera

Tuesday, 07 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

Blur frontman Damon Albarn has revealed that he will be performing live in ‘Doctor Dee’, the opera which he co-created about the life and career of 16th century scientist John Dee.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4, Albarn stated that he would be performing as a part of the opera, also created by theatre director Rufus Norris, but would only be appearing as himself (As opposed to a character). He said: "I'm myself. I'm not walking around in a ruff and tights."

Albarn went on to discuss his inspiration behind the work, his first theatrical venture since 2007’s ‘Monkey: Journey To The West’. Speaking about his connection to the English themes behind the opera, he said: "I've got a really strange emotional connection - it really gets to me, that haunted, magical England. It's something that really stirs me in an irrational way."

Albarn added: “It's just amazing how much colour there is in [Dee’s] ideas. Just imagine the English now if we had kept that spirit in our hearts."

‘Doctor Dee’ will be staged at Manchester Palace Theatre on July 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. The opera will take place as part of the Manchester International Festival, which will also feature performances from Bjork, Wu Lyf and Snoop Dogg.
