PJ Harvey Wins 2011 Mercury Music Prize

Singer-songwriter PJ Harvey has just been announced as the winner of the 2011 Mercury Music Prize. She is the first act to have won the award twice.

Picking up the award for her album 'Let England Shake', PJ Harvey had been the bookies' favourite to win this year's award for a while despite facing tough competition from the likes of BRIT-winning Adele and Tinie Tempah. PJ Harvey last won the award in 2001 for her album 'Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea'.

The 41-year-old explained that the material featured on 'Let England Shake' was inspired by modern conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and when claiming the prize, the singer had this to say.

"Thank you for the recognition of my work on this album.

"It's also good to be here this evening. When I last won 10 years ago on September 11, 2001 I was watching the Pentagon burning from my hotel window.

"So much has happened since then. This album took me a long time to write. It was very important to me. I wanted to make something meaningful, not just for myself but for other people, and hopefully to make something that would last."

Nominees for the award included Anna Calvi’s self-titled album, Metronomy’s ‘English Riviera’, Ghostpoet’s new effort ‘Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam’, ‘Man Alive’ by Everything Everything, Katy B’s debut ‘On a Mission’, ‘Build a Rock Boys’ from Elbow, Tinie Tempah’s ‘Disc-overy’ and Gwilym Simcock’s LP ‘Good Days at Schloss Elmau’. Polly Jean Harvey fought off the competition to be awarded the £20,000 prize, shortly after 10.00pm GMT this evening.
