Foals - What Went Down (Album Review)

Thursday, 03 September 2015 Written by Milly McMahon

Foals represent a perfect storm of emotional anarchy, characterised by their staggering new record, ‘What Went Down’. Here, the sinister intent that reflects in the band’s aesthetic evolves into a standalone beast. They are a raging ego, covered in wounds.

Fully matured from their beginnings as an awkward indie buzzword band, the past 10 years have seasoned Foals sufficiently for them to be considered among the definitive musicians of our era. The chemistry exhibited here represents succinctly their talent for inimitable, charged noise.

Give It All demonstrates Yannis Philippakis’ perfect hurt and scarred attitude to songwriting: “I called you three times last night, running through the streets bloodied from a fist fight. Keep you warm. Keep you there. Wanna keep you all.”

Using metaphors to conjure profound emotion, the language develops and penetrates throughout the 10 songs. Foals have a conceptual approach to sketching experiences of love lived, lost and mourned, they live to write and not vice versa.

London Thunder descends into an aftermath of stillness. Drifting through a memory of pain, it signals and then indulges a melancholy sense of loss with an addictive sweetness. This is as much an album for lovers as it is the heartbroken.

‘What Went Down’ is modern rock ‘n’ roll written with symphonic finesse. Poetic, cynical, painful and overridingly romantic, it represents a new standard, redefining pop and challenging modern ideals of masculinity.
