It's the latest track to be lifted from her debut album, 'When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?', which is due out on March 29 and which she'll support with extensive touring, including shows in Australia, New Zealand, North America and Europe.
The song arrives ahead of the first of three dates she's lined up at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire in London on March 4, 5 and 6 and an intimate set at Pryzm in Kingston. It's a soul-influenced pop number, led by keys and guitar, but given a unique Eilish twist with the inclusion of handclaps and canned applause. The track yet again proves the singer-songwriter's got the chops. She said:
"‘wish you were gay' is about wanting to be with someone so bad it hurts, and not wanting to accept that this person doesn’t want you in return. At least if they were gay, I’d have a valid reason for their rejection and lack of interest in being with me. I wrote the song when I was 14 and madly in love with a boy. It’s supposed to be a fun and playful way at dealing with rejection.”
Following her upcoming dates in the UK capital, Eilish will return this summer for sets at Reading and Leeds festival.
