Angel Olsen Posts New Song Alive And Dying (Waving, Smiling)

Tuesday, 20 April 2021 Written by Jon Stickler

Angel Olsen has unveiled a new song, Alive and Dying (Waving, Smiling).

The reworking of Waving, Smiling — a cut from her 2020 LP 'Whole New Mess' — features an 11-piece orchestra performing string arrangements by Jherek Bischoff. Olsen said:

"This song is all about chapters closing, and learning to let go of things I can’t understand.

"It's very me – I will always nosedive into love, and suffering can definitely come with that. When I hear this version the strings really bring the song to its necessary bittersweet boiling point."

It serves as the latest preview of an upcoming box set 'Song Of The Lark and Other Far Memories', due out May 7 via Jagjaguwar.

The collection contains her 2019 LP 'All Mirrors' and her 2020 record 'Whole New Mess', which were initially intended to be released as a double album, but that never came to fruition. It also contains a bonus LP called 'Far Memory' and a 40-page book of unseen photographs and handwritten lyrics.

Olsen is due to tour Australia in May and June, subject to coronavirus restrictions.
