Girls Aloud's Sarah Harding Dies Aged 39

Sunday, 05 September 2021 Written by Laura Johnson

Sarah Harding has died aged 39.

The former Girls Aloud member and solo artist passed away this morning following a battle with cancer. She was diagnosed with breast cancer that had spread to other areas in August 2020, and this March revealed that her illness was terminal. Her mother broke the news via social media:

"It's with deep heartbreak that today I'm sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away. Many of you will know of Sarah's battle with cancer and that she fought so songrly from her diagnosis until her last day. SHe slipped away peacefully this morning. I'd like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year. It meant the world to Sarah and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved. I know she won't want to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease - she was a bright shining star and I hope that's how she can be remembered instead."

Harding was a singer-songwriter, model and dancer hailing from Ascot, Berkshire. Born in 1981, she’s most famous for her time in Girls Aloud, which she joined having won Popstars: The Rivals back in 2002. She sold millions of records with the group, hitting #1 countless times and scoring platinum records.

When Girls Aloud split in 2009— briefly returning for a greatest hits album, tour and new single a few years later — she focused on her solo career, dropping her solo debut album 'Threads' in 2015.

Following the release, she also made numerous television appearances, including Celebrity Masterchef, Coronation Street, The Jump and Celebrity Big Brother 20.
