Doves have released a new single, Saint Teresa.
Led by the distinctive, rousing vocals of Jimi Goodwin, the track was inspired by the story of a 16th century Spanish nun, Teresa of Ávila, which the frontman discovered during a late night internet search. Early versions of the song were reworked and put on the backburner until it eventually found its way onto the new record. Goodwin explained:
"By keeping it to one side, we were able to reappraise it and make it better. Andy and Jez helped out with it and it’s great that it’s found a home. My Catholicism went out of the window years ago, but I love the iconography associated with the church. They put on a really good show. I identify with it all from my childhood. The story of Saint Teresa is fascinating."
"Sometimes songs can be like a Rubik’s Cube," added guitarist Jez Williams. "You play with it but have to go back to it after a time and, only then, do you really know what to do with it. Saint Teresa was still knocking on the door when we came to record the album, so we took it into sessions with Dan (Austin – co-producer), replacing some of it, changing a few of the lyrics and it turned out great."
The song serves as the latest preview of the band's sixth studio album, 'Constellations For The Lonely', which was due to arrive this Friday (February 14), but has been pushed back two weeks to February 28.
Ahead of its release, three immersive album playback sessions will take place at Jodrell Bank Observatory, where a specially commissioned 5.1 surround sound mix of 'Constellations For The Lonely', complete with atmospheric visual effects, will premiere on Thursday (February 13). Head here for details.
Doves previously teased the follow-up to 2020's 'The Universal Want' with the Andy and Jez Williams-fronted cuts Cold Dreaming and Renegade.
They'll support the LP with a previously scheduled UK tour between February 25 and March 18, which includes their first headline homecoming dates in Manchester in 15 years. As with their run of intimate gigs back in November, the band will be fronted by Andy and Jez Williams without Goodwin, who has chosen not to tour for health reasons.
