With a Mercury Prize under her belt, arena shows in the diary and a Meltdown festival to curate at the Southbank Centre, Little Simz is in-demand and under pressure as her new album ‘Lotus’ lands. The London rapper turns away from inflated hype and braggadocio, though, delivering work that is humble, tranquil and, above all, sincere.
From the first bar, Simz invites us into her headspace and explores themes of exploitation and betrayal, dissecting the catch 22 of becoming successful in the music industry with fierce emotion that serves as a continuation of her 2024 EP ‘Drop 7’, where she came out swinging with unapologetic, cutthroat lyrics.
But, in a canny move, Simz turns down the heat just before reaching boiling point to ponder love and acceptance of herself, paying respect to the family and community around her while exploring the complications that inevitably come with such dynamics.
From the revelations of dreamy acoustic number Peace to the strutting confidence of Lion, every song is tackled with the aim of making sense of success.
The most impactful songs on the album are often the simplest. In keeping their arrangements basic more focus is drawn to some of Simz’s finest writing to date, but when she does deviate from this approach it is entirely necessary. The title track treats us to a grand string arrangement that showcases her ability to control the fluctuating momentum and emotion of the record.
Penultimate track Lonely offers a poignant and transparent admission as Simz admits she didn’t know how to approach this album. So, quite simply, she wrote about herself. In doing so, there is recognition that every shred of acclaim that’s come her way has been founded upon being true to who she is.
