Three years after ‘The Hardest Part’ established artistic credentials to match her famous name, Noah Cyrus returns with ‘I Want My Loved Ones To Go With Me’, which feels less like a difficult second album and more like a modern classic.

Transforming the country-soul foundations of her debut into something altogether more ambitious, this is Americana that inhabits a carefully-constructed emotional landscape showcasing an artist comfortable in her own skin.

At the heart of it is Cyrus’s newfound vocal confidence. Gone are any flecks of uncertainty, with her layered harmonies tracing emotional contours like a master storyteller adding emphasis to their narrative.

The opening track I Saw The Mountains immediately establishes this dynamic, while What’s It All For? is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of mortality and some of life’s fundamental questions.

Lyrically, Cyrus demonstrates remarkable depth, particularly on Man In The Field and Love Is A Canyon, where she paints vivid pictures of loss and longing. The inclusion of her grandfather’s prayer on Apple Tree adds gravitas, while brother Braison’s perspective as a co-writer on family dynamics in Don't Put It All On Me provides fascinating context to her public journey.

Elsewhere, the album’s collaborative spirit elevates rather than overshadows. Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold brings ethereal textures to Don’t Put It All On Me, and Blake Shelton’s presence on New Country feels organic rather than calculated. The closing duet with Bill Callahan on XXX is a masterclass in vocal interplay, their voices weaving together like lovers finding their way through a conversation.

Cyrus has crafted something special here, balancing technical prowess with raw honesty. Working primarily with longtime collaborator PJ Harding, she’s stripped away committee-written songs in favour of something that’s authentically hers. From the Fleetwood Mac-esque buildup of I Saw The Mountains to the tear-jerking finale of XXX’, this is an artist who’s learned to trust her instincts.
