Sam Fender has won the Mercury Prize 2025 for 'People Watching'.

Released in February via Polydor Records, he saw off competition from CMAT, Emma-Jean Thackray, FKA Twigs, Fontaines D.C., Jacob Alon, Joe Webb, Martin Carthy, Pa Salieu, PinkPantheress, Pulp, and Wolf Alice to succeed last year's winners, English Teacher for 'This Could Be Texas'.

The winner was announced tonight during a live ceremony hosted by Lauren Laverne at Newcastle's Utilita Arena, marking the first time in the event's history that the award ceremony has been hosted outside London.

The judging panel featured Danielle Perry, Jamie Cullum, Jamz Supernova, Lea Stonhill, Mistajam, Phil Alexander, Sian Eleri, Will Hodgkinson, Sophie Williams, and panel chair Jeff Smith.

Fender took his People Watching Tour across the UK this summer, with the run including three huge hometown shows at Newcastle's St James' Park and a headline slot at Silverstone Festival. He then headed to North America earlier in the autumn, and is due to take the tour to Australia in November. Head here for tickets.

Tomorrow, the North Shields singer-songwriter is due to release a new single, Talk To You, which features Elton John on piano.
