Louis Tomlinson - How Did I Get Here? (Album Review)

Louis Tomlinson’s third album surpasses expectations when it comes to assumptions around an ex-boyband member’s solo work. From the off, ‘How Did I Get Here?’ offers high energy, explosive indie-pop as, channeling every ounce of angst he has experienced in recent years to create something memorable. At a time when his former bandmate Harry Styles is everywhere, Tomlinson has claimed his own lane and it’s really working for him.
Lemonade seamlessly moves between funky drums and the smooth introduction of an electrifying guitar riff fit to send shivers up the spine. Lyrically, it’s simple, but that’s because the instrumental and vocals are doing the talking. “A little taste is all I need,” Tomlinson sings, demonstrating that his cheeky demeanor is still intact.
The start of On Fire recalls a Tame Impala track with its dreamlike energy, while Palaces is rapid and commanding — a fully-fledged rock track with power in each note.
On Dark To Light, meanwhile, Tomlinson’s vocals are raw and real, with nothing but a seemingly-shy, stripped-back guitar riff.
The crown jewel, though, is Imposter. Its rumbling bass is infectious and, perhaps controversially, there is something of Styles in his lower register.
Overall, ‘How Did I Get Here?’ is confident and varied, with a mix of versatility and Tomlinson’s swaggering blueprint prominent throughout. His best work to date.
