Lip Critic have laid out plans for their second album.
The New York City-based electro-punks will drop 'Theft World' through Partisan Records on May 1, following up their 2024 Partisan debut 'Hex Dealer'.
Tackling the role of theft and how it shapes modern society, politics and art, the album was shaped by a bizarre experience the band had while touring 'Hex Dealer', when frontman Bret Kaser discovered his identity had been stolen and used to make hundreds of purchases, including Lip Critic's discography on Bandcamp.
Kaser tracked down the scammer, a young fan who believed the band's songs contained hidden meanings. Instead of calling the police, they recorded him describing the strange, imaginative world he saw in their music. Fascinated by the wild story, the band scrapped their planned material and recorded a new album inspired by it. They said:
"Theft World is an ode to the power and pervasiveness of stealing. It’s about taking something ugly and using it to make something cute. It’s about eating an absurd world and falling in love with it as you digest."
Alongside the announcement, the band have shared the eerie lead single, Legs In a Snare, which serves up chaotic, jagged rhythms and electronic textures built on clattering, industrial-leaning beats. Head below to view the song's unsettling video, which is directed by Colter Fellows — who has Chanel Beads and Frost Children on his résumé — and mirrors the track's intense energy.
Lip Critic will embark on a North American tour in late May. Head here for details. Tickets are on sale now.
