Leaning into a warm, rootsy sound, blending indie-rock with country and Americana influences, the song is the third preview of the James Petralli-led Texas band's new album, '13', due out on April 24. Petralli said:
"I wrote a version of “Ruby” quite a few years ago. Every few months the melody would pop back into my mind for a while before drifting out again. I picked up a few old cassette recorders at a neighborhood flea market that warbled audio in a way that vividly sparked a memory of the texture of the first few bars of “Street Fighting Man” by The Rolling Stones. This was enough for me to begin chasing the production of the song in earnest.
"I get really excited about making direct connections between my work and the history of rock and roll. I'm not really a purist. I do however feel that attempting to build something new upon existing foundations that represents my friends and I is about the most enjoyable and life affirming way I've found to spend time."
As well as Petralli being born on August 13, the album's title has multiple meanings, with 13 representing independence and creativity in numerology, while also often being seen as unlucky. It's also the band's 13th album.
White Demin previously teased the follow-up to 2024's '12' with the earlier singles Hired Hand #2 and (God Created) Lock And Key.
Alongside the new music, the band have announced new US dates for July and October, as well as some intimate shows in the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany and Spain for summer and fall. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time today (April 2).
