Johnny Marr has laid out plans for his fifth studio album.
The former Smiths guitarist will release 'The Age Of Everything' through BMG on October 2, following 2022's 'Fever Dreams Pt 1-4'. Written in London, but shaped on tour across the East Coast of North America and recorded in Manchester, the album reflects the energy and tensions of city life and is desribed by Marr as his most cathartic songwriting to date. He said:
"This is the record that’s been the most cathartic. The title came to me early in the process and became an inescapable idea. It seemed to sum up the way I think a lot of people are feeling. It’s all encompassing, but it's not necessarily a negative statement. There’s a sense of overwhelm in the culture brought about by technology, but looking at it with a different light, there could also be a sense of possibility."
To mark the announcement, the singer-songwriter has shared the record's opening track Spin, a bright, driving offering that serves up his signature jangly guitar sound. Head below to view the video created by Marr and filmed in Manchester.
He will play a sold-out homecoming show at Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl on July 9 as part of the Sounds Of The City series, followed by a performance at Dublin's Live At Iveagh Gardens series the next day. Later in the year, he'll play his biggest solo headline show yet at London's OVO Arena Wembley on October 24. He also has a number of European dates and festivals appearances lined up throughout the summer.
He'll warm up for those dates with two newly announced intimate shows at Leeds' Stylus on July 6 and the O2 Academy Liverpool on July 7. Tickets for those two gigs go on general sale at 10am on Friday (June 19), while the others are on sale now.
Since his last album, Marr also released 'Look Out Live!' last year, a 22-track live LP that was originally a Record Store Day exclusive. He has also collaborated with a number of major artists, recording four new songs with Gorillaz for their latest album 'The Mountain', and working with Franz Ferdinand on their 2025 single Build It Up.
