Sigur Ros are an Icelandic post rock band from Reykjavík, consisting of frontman vocalist Jónsi Birgisson, known for his use of a cello bow when playing guitar, bassist Georg Hólm and drummer Orri Páll Dýrason.
Formed in 1994, they signed to Sugarcubes label Bad Taste, and released their debut album, ‘Von’ in 1997. Kjartan Sveinsson joined the band in 1998 on keyboards, and contributed to the band’s orchestral arrangements.
‘Ágćtis byrjun’ was released in 1999, and brought the band international recognition, earning them support slots with Radiohead.
Their third album, ‘( )’, was released in 2002, with all the lyrics sung in Hopelandic, a constructed language, without semantic meaning, leaving the listener to make up their own ideas as to the songs’ meanings.
Their fourth record, ‘Takk’ was released in 2005, followed by ‘Međ suđ í eyrum viđ spilum endalaust’ in 2008, and after a hiatus, whilst Birgisson embarked on a solo project, ‘Valtari’ was released in 2012.
Sveinsson left the band in 2013 and that year they also released, ‘Kveikur’.
Sigur Ros are set to play shows in Mexico and North America across the spring and summer before returning to the UK for shows in September. They also play some Secret Sounds Splendour In The Grass headline sideshows in Australia and New Zealand, too.
