Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Condemns Free Music Giveaways

Saturday, 25 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

Megadeth singer and guitarist Dave Mustaine has spoken out against bands who give away their music for free, claiming that the artists are “stupid”, limiting their own success in the long run.

The frontman, who was part of the Metallica line-up before the formation of Megadeth in 1983, also went on to claim that the music industry as a whole was capable of fixing the problems caused by digital downloads and peer to peer piracy.

Speaking to the Brandon Sun, Mustaine said: “I think the record business is just like anything else – it’s going to regulate itself. It’s going to correct itself. The problem is that all the pigs were there with their hands on the steering wheel. They got what they deserved.”

He continued, suggesting that musicians who choose to give away their own music for free are limiting the length of their careers. He said: “Musicians who say they don’t care, that they’d give it [music] away for free, are stupid. They’ve never been hungry. If you’re going out there and being careless, and just letting your songs be downloaded for free, it’s probably going to reflect in your longevity.”

Megadeth are set to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their acclaimed album ‘Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?’ by re-releasing a limited edition version of the LP on July 11th
