Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool (Album Review)

Thursday, 25 June 2015 Written by Huw Baines

There’s a certain breed of indie band that has become lazy and satisfied in the knowledge that their records will be bought in healthy quantities for the rest of time by the ‘proper music’ brigade. It takes a record like ‘My Love Is Cool’ to upset that particular apple cart. Not only will it propel Wolf Alice to stardom, it’ll do so with a much-needed sense of abandon.

As a live band and purveyors of short, sharp EPs, the quartet have been around for a while. Their heady mixture of grunge and left-field pop has been refined to a point here, with their knack for a melody the foundation upon which they build layers of guitar noise and oddball structures.

In terms of pacing, it’s a catch-and-release affair. Early on, with the beguiling Turn To Dust and winsome Bros, there’s a sense of quiet anticipation. Upon the arrival of Your Love’s Whore, things begin to tick and the album’s middle order is explosive.

You’re A Germ, Lisbon, Silk, Freazy and Giant Peach are home to the biggest hooks and some truly exciting twists and turns. There will be very few sequences to come close to it released this year and, with this short burst, Wolf Alice rubber stamp their status as future world-conquerors. It’s that good.

That ‘My Love Is Cool’ tails off just a little is perhaps to be expected, but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing. Swallowtail, Fluffy and Soapy Water are far from being duds, but they do lack the vigour and spiralling sense of adventure of their predecessors.

Wolf Alice already have a collection of songs here to wipe the floor with much of today’s indie set. That they clearly have so much left in the tank is very much cause for celebration.
