Kamasi Washington Posts Metallica Cover My Friend Of Misery

Kamasi Washington has unveiled a cover of Metallica's My Friend Of Misery.
The vast array of instruments that the California jazz legend calls on is a far cry from the grunted vocals and wailing guitar solos of the Bay Area thrashers, offering up a freewheeling, spacey jazz version with the energy and abandon of the original. Press play below.
It arrives along with former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted's riff take on the same track, and comes after Metallica's Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo joined Washington and his band live on stage for a rendition of the song at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl in July.
The saxophonist's cut will feature on the anticipated 53-song tribute album, 'The Metallica Blacklist', which boasts contributions from some of the biggest names in music, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the metal icons' classic self-titled album, famously known as 'The Black Album'.
Other acts contributing reworked songs to the record include Phoebe Bridgers and her take on Nothing Else Matters, Biffy Clyro with their spin on Holier Than Thou, St Vincent's industrial Sad But True, Volbeat's reimagined Don't Tread On Me, and Weezer's faithful interpretation of Enter Sandman. Metallica will appear at North American festivals in September, October and November, followed by two hometown shows at San Francisco's Chase Center in December, the main event of their ongoing 40th birthday celebrations. They also have European festivals scheduled for summer 2022.
