Faye Webster - Underdressed at the Symphony (Album Review)

A lot has changed since Faye Webster put out ‘I Know I’m Funny Haha’ three years ago. She’s now one of those artists whose profiles blew up thanks to organic TikTok virality, giving her previously steady rise something of a turbo boost. But you wouldn’t know it from ‘Underdressed At The Symphony’, where she continues to develop her sound as though nothing has changed, leaving no emotional stone unturned in the process.
Combining soulful, almost angelic, vocals and heartfelt lyrics, opener Thinking About You is six minutes and change of utter perfection, and Webster’s not done there. But Not Kiss twists in some Billie Eilish and the instrumental raucousness of Arctic Monkeys, while its melodic but chorus-free construction is something to be admired.
Wanna Quit All The Time features a compelling country twang, which nestles into the album’s palette surprisingly well, while Lego Ring plays off Lil Yachty’s heavily-AutoTuned, somewhat grating, feature into something deeply appealing.
He Loves Me Yeah! finds Webster channelling the sugar rush of deep infatuation for a romantic partner. “My baby loves me, yeah / he loves me, yeah / I think we're perfect, yeah / we’re perfect, yeah,” she vocalises softly in the chorus, the repetition driving it home.
The closer Tttttime is a delight, with Webster’s quirky, Melanie Martinez-type style simply sublime. From the first track to the last, ‘Underdressed At The Symphony’ underlines her control of her sound, bolstering an already gleaming rep for studied alt-pop.
