Die-hard Mac DeMarco heads might still be working their way through 2023’s 199 song compilation ‘One Wayne G’, but the Canadian singer-songwriter is back with more. On ‘Guitar’, though, he opts for quality over quantity with a handful of short, rich, and poignant tracks.
As tranquil and dreamy as ever, across 12 scrappy, warm cuts DeMarco relies on his charm alongside intentionally lazy drumming, wandering basslines and resonating guitars. Uninterested in stretching the realms of possibility all over again, he instead resolves to let a chord progression naturally run its course.
In doing so he settles into a natural pace that is unhurried and unforced, creating an even more bare-bones vibe than usual. If that’s possible.
Duly, electric guitars are sparsely used across the album, until Rock and Roll delivers a clean-driven, bizarrely inverted anti-guitar solo. It’s reminiscent of your dad, five-pints deep, plucking up the courage at his local pub’s jam night. That’s a compliment.
Lyrically, DeMarco says only what needs to be said. There are no hidden caveats, innuendos, or poetic nuances to contemplate. Most songs only trickle over the two-minute mark so you’re invited to spin them again and again, letting his delicate observations on the bittersweet emotions of solitude sink in through the self-sustaining, meditative landscape.
Putting out a record with the minimalist feel of ‘Guitar’ is less of a leap than splurging almost 200 songs into the world at once, but it’s still a leap. In the hands of many songwriters, you’d probably end up regretting a lost 30 minutes of your life. But there’s no one else quite like Mac DeMarco, one of very few people in the world who could pull out an acoustic guitar at a party without looking like a douchebag.
