Sabrina Carpenter - Man's Best Friend (Album Review)

Sabrina Carpenter has been a supreme performer since her days as a Disney star, but over the past couple of years her profile has shifted in explosive, unexpected ways. ‘Short n’ Sweet’ was a huge hit, catapulting her name onto the lips of pop fans the world over, and she has struck while the iron is hot, releasing ‘Man’s Best Friend’ only 12 months later.
The album’s cover might have received a whole load of mixed reactions online, with hand-wringing meeting endorsements of on-brand satire, but it had the desired effect of ramping up anticipation. Seeking to match its predecessor’s star-wattage, it kicks off with Manchild, the only single released prior to its arrival. It is irresistible — catchy and studded with mocking lyrics that flow in a way that’ll have you laughing while you dance.
It highlights Carpenter’s deliciously wicked personality and it feels like she is telling her fans: “I like men and this is how I deal with it.” It’s cheeky and soulful and the vocals are pristine, every note sweeter than the last.
Tears is up next and, much like her tour performances last year, this one is not PG. The track opens with a deep, funky piano as Carpenter goes full smut.
“I get wet at the thought of you/ Being a responsible guy /Treating me like you're supposed to do / Tears run down my thighs,” she sings, showing her fantasies and sexuality to the world. It’s hard not to love her for it.
My Man On Willpower has an explosive, intergalactic intro and a dream-like melody, while Sugar Talking is home to a powerhouse vocal above and beyond anything else here. We Almost Broke Up is an emotional gem as Carpenter recounts how she presents herself in the public eye, this angled juxtaposed with tracks such as Gogo Juice and House Tour, which are fun with an element of ‘80s synth pop. ‘Man’s Best Friend’ is an album as solid as it is controversial — it might not hit the mark quite like ‘Short n’ Sweet’ did, but its consistency is remarkable.
