Since releasing his first album in 2019, Zach Bryan’s earnest, unique spin on Americana has earned him acclaim and a rapidly growing fanbase. As prolific as he is popular, he returns with his sixth album, ‘With Heaven on Top’, which delivers more of what fans have come to love across 25 tracks, clocking in at over an hour.
It is another massive undertaking in a discography filled with them, but one that is varied and continually interesting despite its length. ‘With Heaven on Top’ is a record full of his ruminative lyrics and trademark humour, and with so much material, fans will likely pore over its many details across multiple listens, dissecting the intricacies and stories within.
After the spoken word opening of Down Down Stream, Runny Eggs really sets the tone. Stripped back to guitar, vocals and harmonica, allowing Bryan’s soft delivery and storytelling to shine through, it suggests he certainly wouldn’t have been out of place among the great singer-songwriters of the 1970s.
Appetite is more expansive, with a larger ensemble and push behind it. Between his last LP and this, Bryan has been collaborating with Kings of Leon and Bruce Springsteen, a sign of his burgeoning reputation. Here, however, the focus is on him and his band and, without a string of guest stars, it really puts him front and centre.
One of the most impressive things about this record is Bryan’s growing musical maturity and range, finding a balance between acoustic and electric sounds and broader strokes with a wider band. The stadium-rock of Dry Deserts, for example, allows him to cut loose with some impressive guitar work.
With so many tracks, it would be easy to wander off the beaten track. But at this point, Bryan knows to keep things flowing, with many of them coming in under three minutes and only a handful over four. It really showcases his aptitude for condensing a story without ever feeling rushed — ‘With Heaven on Top’ is another impressive achievement from someone who feels like they’ve been around forever despite not yet hitting 30.
