The Script - Nothing (Single Review)

The Script have gone from strength to strength after the success of their self-titled debut album. In addition their follow-up, ‘Science and Faith’, has seen them progress into a leader of the genre. The smash hit ‘For The First Time’ erupted onto the UK charts and ‘Nothing’, the follow up to the hit single, is scheduled for release on 21st November. A perfect autumn song to warm up those slightly chilly evenings and it may turn out cheaper than turning on the heating!

The second single is a ballad which is perhaps a bit predictable from the Irish band. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good song but they have made ‘Breakeven’, ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ and then ‘For The First Time’ all in the same light and ‘Nothing’ follows the same sort of pattern.

ImageIt contains flawless vocals from lead singer Danny O'Donoghue with a powerful chorus that feels as if it is on the tip of your tongue leaving you with the urge to just break out into song, perhaps the main selling point of the song. This is an acquired skill which only a handful of songwriters seem to be able to apply to their track. You get the feeling that you have already heard the chorus before because it is very catchy and recognisable.

Lyrically, it is superb as you would come to expect from a ballad by the Irish trio. The song revolves around a failed relationship which doesn’t end in the best terms, a very typical foundation of a pop song. However, the lyrics are put in such a way which somehow makes the forever cliché of the troubled relationship fresh and new which is where I take my hat off to the band. It is very hard to make pop ballads seem credible and ‘cool’  to the youth of the nation. With bands such as JLS capturing the stereotypical young female pop fan within their air-grabbing grasps, The Script have gained a big fan base within the male audience as well as the female which covers both side of the demographic, something that is challenging for any group. For that reason, The Script are making pop songs cool again.

The album ‘Science and Faith’ is a case of more of the same from the band and has achieved great success in the UK. In it’s first week, over 70,000 copies were sold within the UK and just like Bruce Forsyth, it will keep going and going and going. The ‘more of the same’ does turn out to be ‘more of the same good songs’ and there is a definite sound which is getting more and more familiar to fans of the band. A formula that worked for Coldplay and arguably even The Beatles. I am not comparing the Irish band to the greats from Liverpool but the recognition from the songs they create is similar. You hear a song; you know it is The Script.

'Nothing' is a very worthy second single but it has a big act to follow. It is like coming on to perform just after Led Zeppelin. It is possible, but the predecessor has made it a tough act to follow. ‘For The First Time’ was a big hit in Ireland where it debuted at the top spot and earned the band their Number One. The track also reached a credible Number Four in the UK but, in my opinion, its the best effort from the trio to date and is almost a perfect pop song.

I can’t sing the praises of the band enough but I fear that they are falling into a trap that many previous acts have encountered. For their next album a fresh sound would put this band up with some of the greats for their clinical song-writing along with the obvious vocal talent that the frontman possesses. However, an old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a little bit boring and the same old sound could eventually do the band more harm than good.
