‘Sincerely,’ finds Kali Uchis luxuriating in a dreamy, sensual soundscape that feels intimate yet expansive. Across 50 minutes of lush, groove-laden R&B, she explores themes of love, family, and desire with a tone that oscillates between wistful reverie and euphoric joy. It feels like the soundtrack to a long, solitary drive — reflective, sultry, and tinged with the bittersweet glow of a love affair that, while it lasted, was heavy on sex.
The standout Lose My Cool swirls vintage soul cream with a modern caramel. Its warm, analog textures and Uchis’ velvety vocals evoke Amy Winehouse, though with a lighter, more playful touch. Silk Lingerie, by contrast, is a tender, melancholic ballad, its emotional weight carried by ecstatic vocal flourishes that linger long after the final note.
Also, Uchis’ decision to sing in Spanish on her previous albums, and to blend languages and genres here, highlights the Anglosphere’s linguistic blind spots.
Her sound resists easy categorisation within Latin pop, instead drawing from a broader, more eclectic palette. There are echoes of Diana Ross in her delivery, hints of Mark Ronson in the crisp drum production and, most intriguingly, a spectral shimmer reminiscent of Scottish dream-pop pioneers Cocteau Twins.
Like the cerulean sweater monologue in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, ‘Sincerely,’ feels like the end product of a long, hidden lineage. It’s a record shaped by decades of sonic evolution, filtered through Uchis’ raunchy sensibility. The synths are hazy, the endings ambiguous, and the mood unmistakably hers. It’s not just an album — it’s a vibe, a memory, a feeling.
