Gorillaz have announced a new album and tour.
The Damon Albarn-led band will follow-up 2023's 'Cracker Island' with 'The Mountain' on March 20. It will be the first release via their own new label KONG. As a preview they've shared the song The Happy Dictator featuring Sparks.
The record is chock full of guest appearances, with The Smiths guitarist and songwriter Johnny Marr contributing to four tracks, British-American sitar player and musician Anoushka Shankar appearing on five, and appearances elsewhere from IDLES, Gruff Rhys, Omar Souleyman and Yasiin Bey, among many others.
There are also some posthumous contributions on the record, with the tracklist including Bobby Womack, Dave Jolicoeur, Dennis Hopper, Mark E Smith, Proof and Tony Allen. Check it out in full below.
The album was produced by Gorillaz, James Ford, Samuel Egglenton and Remi Kabaka Jr., plus Bizarrap (Orange County), and recorded at Studio 13 in London and Devon, as well as various locations in India (including Mumbai, New Delhi, Rajasthan and Varanasi), Ashgabat, Damascus, Los Angeles, Miami and New York. The album also includes performances in five languages: Arabic, English, Hindi, Spanish and Yoruba.
Gorillaz drummer Russel Hobbs said - “As space dust we are here forever and that’s a mighty long time. This is a musical meditation infused with light. A journey of the soul, with beats…“
The band, who recently concluded their House of Kong exhibition, will support the record with The Mountain Tour, which will travel across the UK and Ireland next spring. They'll perform at arenas in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Cardiff, Nottingham, Liverpool, Belfast and Dublin between March 21 and April 1. Support will come from Trueno at all dates except Manchester and Birmingham.
The group have also announced a summer London show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on June 20, with support from Sparks and Trueno.
Tickets for all dates go on general sale at 11am on September 19.
