History has not been kind to the triple album, but Jeff Tweedy doesn’t care. At 30 tracks and nearly two hours, ‘Twilight Override’ is less a record than an environment; an overflowing dispatch from a songwriter who has spent four decades offloading his heart in increasingly sprawling formats. If his band Wilco once made masterpieces of concision (‘Summerteeth’, ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’) then this feels like a kind-of end point: the maximalist, everything-must-go splurge.
For casual listeners it’s intimidating, maybe even exhausting. But for the faithful — Wilco die-hards, Tweedy-heads, Midwestern centrist dads — it’s a banquet. These songs oscillate between wry humour and ragged melancholy, often within a single verse.
Lou Reed Was My Babysitter delivers lascivious fun, while One Tiny Flower and Stray Cats in Spain locate transcendence in minor-key jams and surreal epiphanies.
Elsewhere, the trembling folk-rock of Caught Up in the Past or the sly gospel shuffle of Feel Free remind us how deftly Tweedy can twist a throwaway line into something spectral or, at a push, holy.
‘Twilight Override’ works less as a collection of songs and more like one of Tweedy’s books: best approached in fragments, shuffled, absorbed over time. There are rousing rockers (Betrayed), haunted ballads (Out in the Dark), and slow-burn epics that suddenly collapse into chaos.
The sheer sprawl blurs at points, but then a lyric lands. “Ain’t it a shame when you wanna die on a beach in the sun / Not a cloud in the sky / and that’s just not how dying’s done,” for example. Suddenly, you’re jolted back to attention.
If this album doesn’t convert the uninitiated, that’s fine. It wasn’t built for them. ‘Twilight Override’ is a love letter to the long-timers, a stem-winder of generosity and indulgence, as funny as it is moving. Too much? Occasionally, yes. But that may be the point.
