Biffy Clyro - Futique (Album Review)

There is no straight line for a frenetic mathcore-tinged rabble to follow in becoming arena staples but, somehow, Biffy Clyro have managed exactly that. The Scottish trio’s early work displayed great technical prowess, along with a penchant for left-field heaviness and nonsensical lyrics, that they then managed to marry with mass-appeal rock in a quite remarkable crossover success story.

‘Futique’ shows just how comfortable they’ve become within that space, being able to call upon their own successes, rather than those of other artists, in order to point the way forward. While none of Biffy Clyro’s later albums have been panned, it did feel as though they were losing some of the charm that brought fans to their door in the first place, whether that was in the days of ‘Blackened Sky’ or indeed more recently on ‘Ellipsis’. Their 10th album feels like an effort to wind the clocks back to their mid-career stadium-era, borrowing a lot from their commercial peak, ‘Only Revolutions’.

The structure and tracklist bear a lot of similarities: the punchy first stanza echoes that LP’s classic opening run of The Captain, That Golden Rule and Bubbles, before winding down for a more intimate track like God & Satan, or in this case, Goodbye.

Friendshipping is full of unexpected twists and turns a la Born Of A Horse, just without the same level of oddness. Woe Is Me Wow Is You, Two People In Love and It’s Chemical! all feel like old friends, right where you’d expect them to be.

Elsewhere, you’ll find the usual warm, wonderful, and slightly weird rock. A Little Love is primed for a singalong by 20,000 voices, for example, while Hunting Season folds in a bit of the post-punk flair that’s been trendy among the radio rock crowd of late into the mix. Shot One treads more wistful ground, with arty electronics and ethereal backing vocals coating big hooks.

It’s a very particular set of circumstances that makes ‘Futique’ feel familiar, teetering on the edge of predictable. It’s also not necessarily a criticism. Biffy are, after all, harking back to one of their strongest works. But for a band with a DNA as potent as theirs, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of sadness at the way they’re starting to get lost in the purgatory of repetition.
