Sugar have reformed for the first time in three decades.
The American alt-rockers, fronted by Bob Mould between his Hüsker Dü days and solo career, had a brief but successful run in the early '90s, but haven't played live or recorded anything since their final show in Japan in January 1995.
Today, Mould and the band — bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis — have released House Of Dead Memories, their first new music in 30 years. Recorded in June at Oakland's Tiny Telephone studio, the track serves up Sugar's signature '90s guitar-driven sound and arrives via Granary Music/BMG accompanied by a video featuring some archival Sugar footage, below.
The trio have also scheduled some special shows next spring, taking place at New York's Webster Hall on May 2 and 3, and London O2 Forum Kentish Town on May 23 and 24.
In addition, they've announced a limited 4LP box set of singles, b-sides and more, titled 'Copper Blue - The Singles Collection', which is set to arrive on Record Store Day's Black Friday event on November 28.
Formed in 1991, Sugar released their debut album, 'Copper Blue', a year later. They dropped a second full-length, 'File Under: Easy Listening', in 1994, which was followed by the 1995 compilation 'Besides' and a 2015 live album recorded back in 1994. Mould said:
"Sugar was a meteorite. I spent all of 1991 writing and performing new material at solo shows. David and Malcolm had never met but I was certain we three would work well together. After weeks of rehearsal in early 1992, we spent three months recording 'Copper Blue' and 'Beaster'. By summer 1992, the musical climate was perfect for what we created. No one could have predicted the results. We held onto the wheel and did our best to enjoy the wild ride. SUGAR was part of a pivotal era in popular music, and a special time in my life."
"The return of Sugar is a moment that I’ve been dreaming about for a very long time," Travis added. "What we managed to accomplish in the short span of time we were in existence still boggles my mind. There was so much packed into that period….the travel, the shows, the recordings and getting to meet so many people who loved and supported us. To get back to working together again with Bob and David is such a gift and I’m looking forward to what the future has in store for us."
Tickets for the London shows go on general sale at 10am local time on October 22, with the New York dates following at 10am local time on October 24.
