On ‘Hopefully!’ Loyle Carner embarks on a journey of self-discovery, with his soulful voice serving as a guide for listeners to follow. Here he leans on an established sound, without getting too precocious or experimental, and it works for him — this is a powerful record that takes Carner to the next level.
Feel at Home is a melancholy and mellow opening chapter. Carner’s performance feels utterly precious, while the introduction of fresh percussion cleverly changes up the melody. It pieces together nicely, suiting Carner’s style to a tee.
All I Need is another song with a surprise up its sleeve. It opens with stripped back guitar chords that fall into Carner’s vocals, appearing for all the world like another softly-spoken affair.
But as a skittering drum and bass beat joins his race-paced bars it transforms into a bonafide hit, complete with poetic lyrics: “My eyes towards the stars / alone at last / the quiet touch my frozen heart / asleep / on a blade of grass.”
But the crown jewel is Purpose. Carner’s mind is spiralling as he tries to convince and reassure himself: “Be clever, you're overthinking it, man / Don't overthink it, don't overthink it.”
He continues to unload sentiments that will chime with anyone in their 20s and 30s who’s trying to figure it out. “Still don't have the words to paint the picture as I see it,” he intones. But Carner’s getting there. ‘Hopefully!’ cements his status as UK hip hop royalty.
