Lord Huron - The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1 (Album Review)

While Lord Huron might not be household names they are a streaming behemoth thanks to The Night We Met, a track that’s done Taylor Swift numbers after being used in the show 13 Reasons Why. It has generated renewed interest in the indie-Americana group’s other work, and the sturdy ‘The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1’ duly does a nice job of introducing their sound, delivering more of what fans have come to expect since their 2012 debut.
Looking Back is a stripped back affair, built around acoustic guitars and Ben Schneider’s vocals, which impart vulnerability and a haunting quality to the song, a sense of regret gradually soaking through.
Bag of Bones, meanwhile, is driven by bluesy guitars and a welcome rough edge. There are shades of Zach Bryan to its approach, tapping into a sound that has found new reach in recent years while giving it a fresh coat of paint.
Nothing That I Need is a lively highlight that seems to encapsulate all that works about Lord Huron — it’s easy to imagine listening to it while driving along a dusty highway or, alternatively, while sinking a cold beer at a barbecue. Its warm country vibes may be simple but it is certainly effective.
Lord Huron are equally effective in more sedate surroundings. The Comedian is slower, more contemplative, with room for extended instrumental sequences that gradually build into something folk-driven and impressive. It offers a wonderful contrast to the more upbeat Watch Me Go, which offers bags of energy and delightful jangle.
‘The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1’ is a delightful blend, weaving through meditative tracks and others with real punch to them. It’s an engaging, eclectic and surprising collection that captures the band on top form, showing that there is more to Lord Huron than a surprise breakout success.
