‘Unclouded’ is the latest chapter in Juliana Melody Prochet’s ongoing attempt to put her own distinctive spin on neo-psychedelia with Melody’s Echo Chamber. It is another dreamy, inviting soundscape that crams plenty of textures and rich detail into its 30-minute runtime, with many of its sub three minute tracks still painting vivid pictures.
Throughout, the French musician uses instrumentation to knit her ideas together. The House That Doesn’t Exist borrows from shoegaze and it is a gorgeous way to kick off proceedings, setting the tone for a tapestry of beautiful moments throughout the record with its lush strings.
The darkness of the lyrics offsets the warmth reflected back by its surface nicely, while the string arrangements on Childhood Dream feel truly cinematic, veering more towards classical music while remaining intertwined wonderfully with the sounds found elsewhere.
Memory’s Underground has more urgency to it, really letting Prochet cut loose compared to some of the LP’s more contemplative moments but, again, the balance between the strings and more explosive sounds is perfectly in sync.
The dreamlike In The Stars, meanwhile, uses its almost-jazz drums to offer a distinctive flavour, accompanying Prochet’s haunting vocals. There is a minimalistic quality to it, allowing the musicianship to shine, while Eyes Closed also has brilliant percussion at its heart, leaning more into psychedelia with short bursts of distorted guitars.
It is remarkable how much is crammed into just half an hour and, with plenty to unpack, ‘Unclouded’ is an album that warrants repeat listens, with plenty of subtlety to some of the grooves and rhythms. It’s a triumphant return for Melody’s Echo Chamber that blends her traditional take on psychedelia with shoegaze and orchestral elements that demonstrate the breadth of her sound, capturing an artist at the top of their game.
