Dry Cleaning - Secret Love (Album Review)

Over the course of two albums, Dry Cleaning have forged a distinctive sound and built a die-hard fanbase. Their third, ‘Secret Love’, has the usual blend of gnarly guitars and spoken word wit, but greater emphasis on post-punk hooks and producer Cate Le Bon’s input leads to a more mainstream-ready effort, albeit one that retains a spirit of experimentation at its core. It doesn’t reinvent their approach as much as it adapts it into something newly thrilling.

Hit My Head All Day has plenty of venom to it, hewing closer to the band’s previous work by being built around Tom Dowse’s impressive guitar work. It’s a real statement of intent, while Cruise Ship Designer is short and punchy, to the point and effective.

Jeff Tweedy plays on My Soul/Half Pint and there are shades of Wilco’s sound in the jangly guitars. However, far from feeling like a copy, it is still very much a Dry Cleaning track as Dowse cuts loose.

Let Me Grow and You’ll See The Fruit incorporates more baroque elements and shades of Self Esteem — it’s packed full of wry humour and helps to mix up some of the sounds found elsewhere. Evil Evil Idiot has darkness at its core, melding post-punk and blues with some of Dowse’s most impressive contributions to date.

Rocks is one of the most upbeat tracks, full of irrepressible energy and easy to picture becoming a fan favourite live. ‘Secret Love’ is very much worth the wait. Retaining the unique feel of their style, it’s quirky and effective, filled with plenty of variety that will reward repeat listens.
