Thanks to his peerless work with Talking Heads, David Byrne needs no introduction. But, in the years since the seminal post-punk group disbanded, he has continued to make pioneering music that spans genres. ‘Who Is The Sky?’ is his first album since ‘American Utopia’ arrived in 2018 and it shows an artist continuing to push boundaries and further define his legacy into his 70s.
As with Byrne’s best work there is a seamless blend of disparate styles, with the opener Everybody Laughs incorporating elements of folk, jazz, and electronic music. My Apartment is My Friend, inspired by Willie Nelson, initially has a jazz inflection before shifting towards pop and electro, Byrne’s storytelling wit still in good shape.
The album was recorded in collaboration with Ghost Train Orchestra, an avant-garde New York collective, and they add impetus plus another sonic dimension.
The haunting strings and horns of A Door Called No are a prime example of this wonderful marriage, while What is The Reason For It? is a clear highlight, the opening recalling I Zimbra by Talking Heads. Here, Byrne is accompanied by Paramore’s Hayley Williams on vocals in an energetic duet.
‘Who Is The Sky?’ is another memorable record in a catalogue teeming with them. Across its 12 tracks Byrne once again proves his singularity and why he is held in such high regard. The partnership with Ghost Train Orchestra adds an extra layer to his sound and it’s a partnership that shows potential should he want to collaborate with them again in future. Byrne has never been one to stand still and he continues to move forward.
